The Contrast at the Cross Luke 23 39-43




Read the passage: Luke 23


          one who           one who

v.40 1. humbles his heart hardens his heart further
(Dost thou not fear God …?)

v.40 2. reveals his heart hides his heart
(Dost thou not fear God, …?)

v.40 3. fears and is freed condemns, and is condemned
(Dost thou not fear God?) v.39- (…save thyself and us.)
fears God

v.42 4. reverences Christ rejects Christ
(and he said unto Jesus, …)

v.42, 5. is justified. justifies
43 (…Today…) v.39- (if thou be the Christ …)
sins forgiven Argues he is all right-worthy of sparing
         a good person, sincere, never hurt 
 anyone

v.42 6. bound in love bound in hatred
(Lord, remember me when thou 
comest into thy kingdom.)
surrendered love

v.43 7. deserves to die, but is spared      deserves to die, and does
(Today thou shalt be with me in paradise)

v.43 8. is forever set free is forever condemned
(Today thou shalt be with me I John 3: 18, 19
in paradise)

v.43 9. one is remembered one is forgotten
(Today thou shalt be with me in paradise)

v.43 10. one who rejoices one who rails- blasphemes
