The Need for Renewal Matthew 9 16, 17

Read the passage: Matthew 9

v 16 1) The condition of man's heart apart from Christ is one in need of renewal. (old garment) It is old.

2) Man attempts to change or "patch up" the condition of man's heart.
(putteth a piece of new cloth on an old garment)

3) Man's patch of change does not adhere or mesh will with his old nature and does not last.
(the tear is made worse)

v 17 4) The need of man is to retain that which is of great value.
(neither do men put new wine ...else they break)

5) The self made efforts of man at renewal fail and he ends up perishing as does all that he felt was valuable.
(the wine runneth out and the wineskins perish)

6) Christ does not patch an old life but makes it totally new.
(but they put new wine into new wineskins.)

7) The life of Christ preserves the life of man and preserves the testimony of Christ in keeping man.
(and both are preserved)
