Lessons from the Jordan Joshua 3: 1-9, 18

Read the passage: Joshua 3

The Jordan river was clearly identifiable.  Josh. 3: 1 "came to Jordan, …and lodged there before they passed over."  They were on the side of the Jordan for the purpose of crossing over.
ark of covenant- evidence of God's presence; God's authority,
priests carrying the ark- evidence of God's moving-direction
God's people are to stand upon God's authority.
God does the impossible- dividing the waters.

v.1 1. God brought his people to the Jordan.  God initiated.
(… and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children
of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.)

v.3- 2. God gave His word of authority
(And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant
of the Lord your God, …)

v.3,43. God gave instruction to be followed.
(…then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. Yet there shall be a
space between you and it, …)

v.16 4. God parted the water (did the impossible)- while His people were in place at the
Jordan.
(That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon a heap
very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down
toward the sea of the plain, even the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off: and the
people passed over right against Jericho.)

v.17 5. God sent His people across.
(And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry
ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground,
until all the people were passed clean over  Jordan.)
God wanted His people to have the land.

v.16 6. God asked permission of no man.
(That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon heap
…and the people passed over right against Jericho)

v.10 7. God takes care of the enemies.
(And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and
that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and …)

v.14-8. The believer cannot get over the Jordan river by himself, but must be divinely
                 escorted.
17 (And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over
Jordan, and: And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests
that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, …That the waters which came down
                from above …)

4: 9. The Jordan becomes a reminder of God's greatness and goodness forever.
5-8 (And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the Lord you God into
the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his
shoulder, according unto the number or the tribes of the children of Israel: …)
God established the means of reminder.

4: 10. God leaves His reminder in place.
9, 18 (And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the
feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this
                day.)
